New late night taxi service for Bristol will make transport easie

A new share a taxi scheme to be introduced in Bristol in the coming weeks should help those who live on the outskirts of the city.

Bristol City Council is expected to make an announcement some time next week.

The new scheme is designed to replace the night time bus service at the weekends.

It is anticipated that the new share a taxi scheme will save the council £50,000 in subsidies, also giving a boost to local taxi companies, along with making it safer for people to get to their homes.

The new scheme should also help those who are looking to rent in Bristol, but cannot afford the higher rents now demanded.

Letting agents in the more outlying suburbs, will be able to utilize this new benefit, for those who primarily would not consider living away from the city centre area.

Local Councillor Guy Poutney suggested that the idea would prove beneficial for almost everyone. He said: "This will be something good that we can do for the taxi trade in Bristol, it should save the taxpayers a bit of money and actually provide a better service to the public as well - if it works this will be a good all around win."

BBC News report that passengers who would have had to use night-buses to make an affordable late-night journey from Bristol to Avonmouth or Henbury will now be able to catch a shared-taxi for the same £4 fare.

Bristol letting agent Kevin Cox of Igloolets.com said "This is a great idea for late night revelers, it alleviates having to travel on public transport, which at night can be a rather daunting prospect, especially if you have someone on board who has had a few too many. It's certainly something that any letting agent can now use, when promoting a property that is not main stream city centre. Sadly Bristol has lacked a good reliable, bus service at weekends for years. Sometime ago, Bristol City Council, introduced considerably more taxi's, however they have often been cost prohibitive for most, making a nighttime in the city centre expensive"
