Recent research has shown that sales prospects for house sellers who are smokers, are less than those of none smokers.
It is not only people looking to purchase property, that are put off by a property that has been occupied by smokers.
Many prospective tenants will often not take a property that smells of smoke. When renting a property is concerned, smokers also find it increasingly difficult, over 60% of Landlords instructing their letting agent not to let to smokers.
Over 30% of Landlords who are prepared to let to smokers claimed they would hold back at least a third of the deposit, to cover cleaning costs of tobacco smoke and smells in the carpets and curtains after the tenant had vacated
Over 39% of tenants claimed that they would navigate around this by telling their letting agent that they were non smokers to enable them to secure the property of their choice
Speaking to walletpop.co.uk, leader of the research Jennifer Warner explained: "It's no surprise that in today's ultra-competitive rental market, landlords are penalising [smokers] with higher rental charges and, in many cases, refusing to let properties to smokers at all."
