A recent survey by Endsleigh insurance has said that the average student will take with them to university over £2600 woth of electronice itmes from laptops to mp3 players, cameras and smartphones, along with ipods and game consoles
So few seldom take consider taking out any form of insurance. Liam Burns the National Union of Students President says: “Moving away from home for the first time can mean taking a lot ofvaluable itemswith you, and the nature of higher education means students need regular access to expensive equipment such as laptops and cameras. “Taking precautions against theft and damage can provide you with valuable peace of mind and ensure that you are not left out of pocket at a time when money can be particularly tight.”
Some top tips are:
- Shut and lock your accommodation doors and windows when you out if even for only a short time. Especially if your on the ground floor.
- Don’t shout about how much stuff you have around campus and bars when your out and about, and certainly don’t leave them on view when you go out, at the least draw your curtains or blinds.
- For what it costs buy some contents insurance.
Don’t assume you can claim against your parents household insurance at this is often not the case, there is also the issue that should you make a claim on the household policy it will affect the no claims bonus, and will no doubt make the next years premiums higher.
Tenants insurance is often not taken up by tenants especially students, and Letting Agents seldom offer a policy as part of the renting package when tenants move into a a new property. Bristol letting agent Kevin Cox says 'All to often tenants assume that the Landlords insurance will pay out, should the property be broken into, sadly in all cases this is not true, a landlords policy often only covers the buildings and the Landlords contents, not the tenants'
