The average British person expected to be living in rented accommodations until they are 35
So says research carried out by Post Office Mortgages, who recently questioned 700 people who did not currently own a home, and felt this was unlikely until they were 35.
The research found that women were more often optimistic than men about raising finance for a deposit for a home. Overall women expect to purchase a home when they are 34 compared with men who expect to be 37.
Alarmingly, over half of those who were questioned believed they would never be able to purchase a home, unless their circumstances changed significantly
Letting agents in Bristol and throughout the UK believe this is a trend set to continue for the foreseeable future, with Landlords increasing their portfolios accordingly, as the demand for renting in Bristol continues unabated.
Speaking to mortgageintroducer.com, Post Office head of mortgages Mike Cook attempted to explain why potential homeowners are so pessimistic about the current state of the housing market.
He said: "Many would-be first-time buyers may have been put off trying to get onto the housing ladder by the size of deposits now needed and some may be deterred by their perception of high mortgage repayments."
According to myintroducer.com, The Post Office have been conducting this study annually since the early 1960s, when the average for buying a home was just 23.
